Alanya – a coastal town on the Turkish Riviera, is a unique blend of ancient Seljuk heritage and modern resorts. Alanya Castle
Alanya Castle is surrounded by walls with a length of 6 km and is situated on a 10-hectare peninsula. Although its establishment and founders remain unknown, the geographer Scylax mentioned Alanya as Coracesium in the 4th century BC.
By gaining Alanya, Anatolian Seljuk sultanate had a strong castle on the coast of the Mediterranean as well as a strong foundation in both the sea and the land. The Castle’s underground water cistern can store up to 12,000 cubic meters of water, which was crucial for its survival during long sieges. The Süleymaniye Mosque, covered market with Ottoman bazaar at Upper Castle (Yukari Kale), and traditional Alanya houses are monuments from the Ottoman period that are worth exploring.
Red Tower
The Red Tower, built in the 13th century by order of Alaeddin Keyqubad I, was intended to protect the harbor, shipyard, and Alanya Castle against attacks from the sea. The tower’s octagonal shape and red brick exterior make it a unique example of medieval Mediterranean defense structures. Its base on a sloping bedrock gives it a height of 33 meters at the east but is 3 meters shorter at the west side. Its red brick exterior gives it a unique and unforgettable appearance, making it a favorite among visitors and locals alike.
Alanya Castle and Red Tower have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2015, highlighting their cultural and historical significance.
